Portuguese is a "Romance Language" and is the sixth most commonly spoken language in the world with over 200 million speakers. Here is a list of countries where Portuguese is spoken:

First manuscripts in Portuguese date back to the 13th century.
Foreign Influences:
Spanish: from the 15th to the 17th centuries the Spanish language was used as a second language for the well-educated Portuguese people.
French: it was also used as a second language in the 18th century.
Arabic: approximately 1000 words in Portuguese come from the Arabic language (e.g. alface, oxalá etc...)
After the Second World War, other languages such as Italian and English had an influence in Portuguese.
